Special-Needs Seminar: Building a Community of Care for Parents, People and Kids with Special Needs

Saturday, Sept. 11 | 9 am-noon | at Rooftop Church - Community Center

Learn how to show the love of Jesus to families with special needs in our community and church. Join us for a Special-Needs Seminar: Building a Community of Care for Parents, People, and Kids with Special Needs. This event is for everyone - families with special needs and people who support them, including teachers, friends, neighbors, and church leaders. The workshop will be broken up into two sessions for different audiences.

The first session, "Self-Care for Parents of Kids with Special Needs," is designed for caregivers. The second session, "Caring for Caregivers: How to Love Kids with Special Needs and their Families as Christ Loves All of Us," is for everyone. Childcare provided.

Andy Kerckhoff and Marian Wendell, licensed counselors at Revision Christian Counseling, will be among our guest speakers. Andy earned his Masters in Counseling from Missouri Baptist University, has 27 years of full-time K-12 teaching experience, is a caregiver for an adult with profound special needs, and author of the book Critical Connection and the blog Growing Up Well. Marian is a graduate of Covenant Theological Seminary. She specializes in children and adolescents in various areas, including but not limited to trauma, ADHD, learning disabilities, adoption, anger management, anxiety, behavioral issues, coping skills, depression, family conflict, oppositional defiance, and parenting. You will also hear from Rooftop parents about their own experiences.

Feed Back from Families

Rooftop Church has a growing population of families who are caring for children with exceptional needs. Raising a child with special needs has a high rate of burnout and isolation. God designed us to be in community with one another. Rooftoppers Erin Stone, Kathie Mueller, and Katie Ellis, parents of children with exceptional needs, are looking to connect these families.

They are looking for feedback while considering a new ministry. If your family fits into this community, please consider completing an online survey here. The results will be used to create a proposal, framework, and mission for the ministry. Questions? Email Erin Stone.
