Re: The Where Statement - Discuss and Debate

I'll bite, it's a slow day...in my opinion, I think that because of the major leadership changes that have occurred this year (Rob's resignation, doubling the elder team, etc.), Rooftop is in a "rebuilding" or "regrouping" phase, for lack of a better word.  It's hard to move forward when we're building up our leadership.  To use Matt's ship analogy, it's hard to move forward or go in the right direction when the sails aren't on the mast or the rudder isn't in the water.  Once the elder team is developed and the leadership gaps are filled, we'll be better equipped to prepare for what God has in store for us, whether that be expansion or not.

That said, simply seeing a Sunday service can tell you that we are far from apathetic.  Not only are our doors (and children's rooms) bursting at the seams, but more importantly, as Hudson likes to stress, our church is growing deeper as well as wider.  People are getting baptized, babies are getting dedicated, relationships are being strengthened and restored, prayers are being answered, people are being healed, the Word is being preached, people are being served, lives are being changed, and God is working through all of us.  His presence is deeply felt every time I walk into church.

    Hey Tom...

Thanks for posting.  You read the situation correctly.  While meeting with Rooftoppers this past week I've used the phrase "reconstituting" to describe what's going on in the church.  The elder team just expanded, we said goodbye to one Associate Pastor and are looking for another, some fourth-floorers have moved on while others have stepped up.  If somebody were reading a book of Rooftop's history, we're kind of in mid-page-turn.  This is producing some anxiety in my own heart, as the drama of a good story always does.  But it's good--no, great--to see that even as the church reconstitutes, we (miraculously!) haven't lost much momentum.  We had our highest-attended Sunday service ever a few weeks ago.  We had 10 visitors last week.  Newcomer's pizza was packed a while ago.

As far as all this relates to the Where Statement, it's something we need to revisit, as we haven't had a lot of organizational time over the past year to move forward on it.  But we're making progress.  We successfully expanded the elder team.  We're in the middle of an AP search.  And early next year, the elders are planning on dealing with a couple long-standing organizational matters screaming for attention: a more nuanced approach to the Lord's Supper and a more strategic church-wide discipleship strategy.  It's imperative that we address both those items--both our short-term and long-term health as a church depend on it.  After that, I believe we'll be in a better position to revisit the dormant Where Statement.  What will that revisiting-process look like?  Stay tuned.
