Service Ministry

PURPOSE:

To instill an attitude of service at Rooftop, and through that attitude affect Rooftop and the community-at-large.

RELEVANT ROOFTOP VALUES:

  • service
  • evangelism
  • community

GUIDING VERSE:

"...I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me" (Matthew 25:35-36).

EXPLANATION:

Service can take all sorts of forms.  It can be helping your neighbor with yard work, changing the oil in your friend's car, or giving a few bucks to a homeless person on the street.

Some of the most meaningful types of service are these spontaneous, informal, and interpersonal actions, and we hope that, as a follower of Christ committed to serving others as he did, you are constantly looking for opportunities like these to demonstrate his love.

At the same time, we recognize the importance of providing scheduled service projects, especially for those of us who have a hard time finding or following up on opportunities to serve in our day-to-day lives.  The service committee at Rooftop is committed to providing these organized opportunities to all who are interested in participating in them.

SERVICE COMMITTEE:

Of course, these events don’t plan themselves.  Even the opportunities with details that are largely arranged by parachurch ministries (like Habitat for Humanity) still require organizational and motivational efforts on the part of Rooftoppers in order to maximize our participation.

Therefore, there exists at Rooftop a team of passionate servants who are responsible for

  1. the choosing and scheduling of service opportunities;
  2. the organization and publicizing of these opportunities; and
  3. the participation in and motivation of other to participate in these opportunities.

The team usually gets together every month or two under the leadership of the service ministry director, Mark Kamil, for planning and renewing of Rooftop’s vision for serving through discussion, prayer, and meditation on Scripture.  Additionally, Mark facilitates group communication through emails and online forums, and regularly touches base individually with the service committee members.

If you think you might be interested in shaping “how Rooftop serves” in this sort of role, contact Mark. He’ll answer any questions you may have, and help you decide if volunteering on the service committee might be a good fit for you.  Either way, plan on diving in to the next service event as we strive to live out our value of service to a world never more in need.

And, even if you can’t make any of the upcoming events, pray for God to be glorified through us as we serve him and others through our humble efforts.
